About Stony Brook

Overview
Stony Brook, Long Island, New York residents take pride in living there, and anyone who visits can understand why. About one and a half hours away from the hustle and bustle of New York City, Stony Brook is unique as it still offers that small town, quaint and cultural atmosphere.

Situated on the picturesque North Shore of Long Island, the area is home to, among other things, the State University of New York at Stony Brook, The Stony Brook School, and "Stony Brook Village." Stony Brook is part of the town of Brookhaven.

The population of Stony Brook is over 19,000, and the median family income is $90,000—over twice the national average. Homes tend to be expansive and classic in the east coast style, and land parcels are often in excess of half an acre.

History

The history of the town has been closely linked to that of Ward Melville, a local businessman who at one point owned most of what is now sometimes called the "Three Villages" (consisting of Stony Brook, the hamlet of Setauket, and the incorporated village of Old Field). The Three Village Central School District  serves all three communities.

Beginning in 1939 with the creation of the Community Fund (currently the Ward Melville Heritage Organization), Ward Melville began the transformation of the area into his idea of an idyllic New England village, with white clapboard and quaint stores. This effect has been largely achieved in the population center, which consists of a green and a crescent of stores. In further pursuit of this goal, Melville donated the land and funds for the creation of the State University of New York at Stony Brook to the state of New York, as well as for the local school district. The schools are generally considered to be above average. (1)

Transportation

You can reach Stony Brook via the Long Island Expressway (LIE, I-495) eastbound from the Queens Midtown Tunnel in Manhattan or the Throgs Neck Bridge or Whitestone Bridge in Queens. If you prefer to travel by train, the Long Island Railroad operates the Port Jefferson line from Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan to Stony Brook.

Air travel is greatly simplified by having MacArthur Airport  in nearby Ronkonkoma. Several major airlines provide service to MacArthur, including Continental, Delta, Southwest and US Air. In addition to local hops, they offer non-stop service to Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, Baltimore and Tampa.

La Guardia International Airport is about an hour away, and you can be at Kennedy International in about ninety minutes.

Real Estate Tips
Selling Your Home >Your Selling Strategy

Have your housing needs expanded along with your income? Are you are thinking about selling your property and looking for a new home? The transition can be accomplished smoothly by using a systematic approach.

As part of your selling strategy, it is advantageous to have your present house under contract before you begin a serious search for a new home. This will make you attractive to sellers in two ways. You won't have to include a contingency in your offer to cover the sale of your present home. You will strengthen your negotiating position by improving your financial circumstance with an accepted offer. In a situation where there are multiple offers on the new home, the chances of your offer being accepted are better if it isn't dependent on selling another house before you can make a move.
